BRC holding consultation on nutritional labelling

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) is holding a public consultation in order to gather opinions on how the new front-of-pack nutritional labelling system for food should look like, reports

Produced in partnership with the Department of Health, the BRC wishes to find out how the new hybrid system for displaying nutritional information should be presented and positioned in the eyes of the public.

Following on, the Department of Health will use these viewpoints to make a recommendation on the look and content of these new labels.

Andrea Martinez-Inchausti, deputy food director at British Retail Consortium, commented on the consultation to "This is a great example of how retailers are leading the way in helping customers to make informed choices about the food they buy.

"Our members are working closely with the Government to find a sensible and consistent approach to providing this nutritional information, which works best for customers," she added.

The consultation follows last year's calls from government regarding a consistent front-of-pack food labelling system, detailing the fat, salt sugar and calorie count of each product. According to, the issue has been under discussion for the 'past decade' with a number of campaigners seeing the labels as an ideal way to tackle obesity.
