Consumers need to pay attention to salt levels on labels, say experts

Health experts have claimed that Brits need to pay attention to the salt levels on labels if they want to live longer, according to

Doctors claim that the number of deaths from heart disease would dramatically fall if people paid more attention to how much salt is in the food they are eating and altered their behaviour accordingly.

Research from the British Heart Foundation (BHF) showed that 20,000 lives could be saved if the nation reduced their salt levels.

Victoria Taylor, senior dietician for the BHF, said that more work needs to be done to make sure British people are consuming less salt.

She told "The government has worked with the food industry to reduce the amount of salt in our food and make labels clearer. But there is still work to be done by everyone because the majority of Brits are still consuming more salt than they should be."

Ms Taylor continued: "Eating too much salt may raise your blood pressure and having high blood pressure increases your risk of developing coronary heart disease."

According to BHF figures, men currently consume around 9.7 grams of salt a day and women 7.7 grams. This is despite the fact the World Health Organization revised recommended salt levels for adults from six grams, down to five grams just last month.
