Committed to colour

Tuesday, 19 January 2010

All printing jobs at Fine Cut are routinely screened for exact colour match. Whether you are purchasing screen printed labels, hot foil printed labels or even digitally printed labels you can rest assured that Fine Cut will match the colour you desire.

As a standard we work to all recognised colour matching systems - including Pantone, BS and RAL, and have a skilled workforce with the capabilities to mix or select the required ink or ribbon. Although we are limited in some label printing processes with the spectrum of colour, for instance with hot foil printing we must select a colour ribbon although we are confident we can choose a colour that between us represents your company colour perfectly. With all our screen printed labels we mix the colour to order - matching any recognised colour system to perfection. As with our digital labels we have the capabilities and expertise both in prepress and on the press to manipulate any colour so it represents the colour you require.

For further information or to discuss any label or marking project you may have, just get in contact.

What is Thermal Printing?

Monday, 18 January 2010

Fine Cut is at the forefront of thermally printed labels - a common printing process in the manufacture of labels. Thermal printing is typically done via your desktop computer on specialist thermal printers - using heat sensitive printing ribbons and a multitude of different substrates.

After designing your label on the computer you then select what substrate you wish to print on, be it Polyester, Vinyl, Paper or whatever you desire as well as the colour ribbon (this is effectively the ink of the print and comes in a roll format). Both the roll of substrate and roll ribbon passes through the printer, where the print head which presses the two together with the pattern/design of the label being replicated by hundreds of tiny pins that have descended according to the design. Each pin effectively represents one pixel from the computer design, therefore the higher the printer resolution (e.g. 300 dpi) the better quality the print.

Thermally printed labels are generally die cut on Newfoil machines prior to printing, and therefore come off of the printer ready for despatch to the customer. Thermal printing is both practical, cost efficient and particularly durable - so please get in contact to discuss any or your label requirements.

How time flies

Tuesday, 3 November 2009

Those of you that have been Fine Cut bookbinding customers for a long time now, may well remember our first bookbinding catalogue (please see picture opposite).

This rare gem was discovered recently, hiding away amongst other Fine Cut literature from our early years. This brochure was one of the very first advertisements of our already extensive catalogue of bookbinding tools. Amongst other things it highlighted our huge range of brass type and bookbinding finishing tools which we still make to the highest standards today.

Fine Cut may have modified our name over the years and have modernised as a company since this literature was printed, back in the 80's, but you can rest assured that we are still providing only the finest crafted bookbinding tools on the market which has kept us at the forefront of the industry for so long.

For further information or to enquire about our whole range of bookbinding finishing tools please get in contact.

Laser engraved cornflakes - what next?

Wednesday, 14 October 2009

Kellogs announced today that it may start branding individual cornflakes in each packet to protect itself against similar imitation products on the market.

Th individual flakes will be laser marked and a certain proportion will be inserted into each box and could mark the beginning of other schemes to protect brands - if deemed successful.

Fine Cut feels the operation will not only be time consuming but a costly venture, as laser engraving logos onto cornflakes is "nutty" and more suitable to their other brand 'Crunchy Nut'. However, in all seriousness, Kellogs must have a fairly logical reason to proceed with the idea and a suitably large budget for it to succeed.

If you have any laser engraving or marking projects that require a quality finish at an affordable price (no cereal thanks) please get in touch with colin@finecut.co.uk

Peter Tylers 'Big' Birthday

Friday, 9 October 2009

It's with great pleasure that all of us at Fine Cut can wish our Managing Director, Peter Tyler, Happy Birthday.

However, this is no ordinary birthday! Peter is celebrating his 50th birthday this year, although he informs us it's a clerical mistake on his birth certificate and infact he's really only 40.

The Fine Cut team decided to buy something special to celebrate his birthday, so together purchased a brand new dog house for his beloved canine or for times when Carol won't let him in the house. Peter was ecstatic with the present and could not wait to try out his new luxurious dwelling.
